Each year, Farm City week is celebrated the week of Thanksgiving in Alabama. This week serves to remind consumers where their food and goods come from, as well as, how important the relationship is between producers and consumers. In conjunction with this celebration, the Jefferson County Farmers Federation holds an annual poster contest for grades kindergarten through sixth grade. With a different theme each year, participants illustrate the theme, showing off their creative skills. The competition awarded 4 winners, 2 in grades k-3rd and 2 in grades 4-6th. Winners are then honored at the annual Jefferson County Farm City Banquet.

In addition to honoring the winners of the Poster Contest, the Jefferson County Commission bestows the Farmers Federation with a Farm-City Proclamation, marking the occasion. Commissioners Jimmie Stephens and Joe Knight shared the proclamation with the group as well as a few remarks about Farm-City Week.

This year, we had 8 schools participate, totaling 130 posters submitted. Here are the winners from this year's contest:

K-3rd grade: 1st place- Leah Nasser, 2nd grade, Sun Valley Elementary Teacher: Ms. Cheryl Gordon

2nd place- Heidi Ruiz,    3rd grade, Sun Valley Elementary Teacher: Ms. Cheryl Gordon

4th-6th grade: 1st place- McKenzie Wicks, 5th grade, Sun Valley Elementary Teacher: Ms. Cheryl Gordon
