Several of our Jefferson County Farmers Federation Board members recently made the trip to Washington D. C. for the Legislative Conference to meet with our Representative Delegation. There was a welcome dinner on the night of arrival, with business beginning first thing in the morning with briefings. The guest speaker was US Representative Glenn Thompson, Chairman House Committee on Agriculture. Small group meetings were held throughout the afternoon and a Congressional BBQ in the evening with special guests: USDA Under Secretary Greg Ibach & Congressman Drew Ferguson. Later, a beautiful moonlight monument tour was held from 8-9 PM.

Thursday began with Congressional Breakfast meetings for local representatives in the county areas. Representatives included: Rep. Terri Sewell, Rep. Bradley Byrne, Rep. Martha Roby, Rep. Mike Rogers, Rep. Robert Aderholt, Rep. Mo Brooks and Rep. Gary Palmer. These are always helpful and informative meetings. The group also met with Senator Richard Shelby where he received the American Farm Bureau's highest award, “The Golden Plow.” This award specifically recognizes members of Congress who exemplify agricultural leadership and support Farm Bureau policies. After lunch, small group meetings were held throughout the afternoon. The United States Environmental Protection Agency had various speakers and this was a very productive meeting.

We as farmers always have helpful information to bring back to our county to share among the rest of the farmers in the area, along with suggestions for the betterment of the farmer. .
